Calibration
Description of the activity
A calibration laboratory performs calibrations both within its own facilities and externally at customer sites. Calibrations ensure the long-term metrological traceability of instruments and samples to national or international standards and are performed using appropriate equipment and by technically competent personnel. The scope of each calibration laboratory’s activities is defined, for each metrological sector, by the physical quantities and instruments, as well as the measurement ranges and uncertainty that the laboratory is able to assign to each measurement result.

General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories
Document issued
The validity of calibrations is certified by the calibration certificate, issued by the calibration laboratory that performed the assessment.
What the certificate guarantees
The calibration certificate guarantees that the values it contains, along with their associated uncertainties, refer to the corresponding SI measurement unit and that this information can be transferred to the measurements performed using them.
What the certificate does NOT guarantee
The calibration certificate for a measuring instrument does not guarantee that the instrument is used correctly and does not provide the uncertainty of the measurement it performs.
The calibration certificate for a measurement standard does not guarantee that the standard is used correctly and does not provide the uncertainty of its value if the same calibration conditions are not met.
